Employee State Insurance (ESI) is a social security and health insurance scheme provided by the Government of India. It was established under the ESI Act of 1948, and it is managed by the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), which is a statutory body under the Ministry of Labour and Employment.
The ESI scheme provides benefits to employees in case of sickness, maternity, disability, and death due to employment injury, provides medical care to insured persons and their families. Employers and employees both contribute to the scheme. Employers are responsible for registering their employees under the ESI scheme and paying their share of the contribution to the ESIC.
Who is eligible for ESI registration?
ESI registration is mandatory for employers who have more than 10 employees. In some states, the threshold limit is 20 employees. Employers must register themselves and their employees with the ESIC within 15 days of the applicability of the scheme. The applicability of the scheme is based on the location of the business establishment and the
Number of employees. The employees must be drawing a salary of less than Rs. 21,000 per month to be eligible for ESI benefits.
Documents required for ESI registration
The following documents are required for ESI registration:
- PAN card of the employer
- Registration certificate of the establishment
- List of employees with their details such as name, date of birth, salary, and joining date
- Bank account details of the establishment
- Address proof of the establishment
- Certificate of registration for Shops and Establishment Act
- Photographs of the employer and employees
ESI registration can be done online. After applying for registration,the employer will receive a permanent identification number (PIN) which must be used for future ESI transactions.
